چکیده

Socially interactive robot needs the same behaviors and capabilities of human to be accepted as a member in human society. The environment, in which this robot should operate, is the human daily life. The interaction capabilities of current robots are still limited due to complex inter-human interaction system. Humans usually use different types of verbal and nonverbal cues in their communication. Facial expression and head movement are good examples of nonverbal cues used in feedback. This paper presents a biological inspired system for Human-Robot Interaction (HRI). This system is based on the interactive model of inter-human communication proposed by Schramm. In this model, the robot and its interaction partner can be send and receive information at the same time. For example, if the robot is talking, it also perceive the feedback of the human via his/her nonverbal cues. In this work, we are focusing on recognizing the facial expression of human. The proposed facial expression recognition technique is based on machine learning. Multi SVMs have been used to recognize the six basic emotions in addition to the neutral expression. This technique uses only the depth information, acquired by Kinect, of human face.

Multimodal Cognitive Nonverbal and Verbal Interactions: the Neurorehabilitation of Autistic Children Via Mobile Toy Robots

Multimodal cognitive nonverbal processes could be thought as a building block from which emotional and verbal expressions could emerge. With the intention to explore this hypothesis, we studied the interaction between autistic children and mobile toy robots during free spontaneous game play both quantitatively and qualitatively. Cognitive nonverbal criteria (eye contact, touch, manipulation, an...

Achieving Multimodal Cohesion during Intercultural Conversations

How do English as a lingua franca (ELF) speakers achieve multimodal cohesion on the basis of their specific interests and cultural backgrounds? From a dialogic and collaborative view of communication, this study focuses on how verbal and nonverbal modes cohere together during intercultural conversations. The data include approximately 160-minute transcribed video recordings of ELF interactions ...

Face - to - Face Communication Is a Highly Interactive Process Where Participants Mutually Exchange and Interpret Verbal and Nonverbal Messages

Face-to-face communication is a highly interactive process where participants mutually exchange and interpret verbal and nonverbal messages. Communication dynamics represent the temporal relationship between these communicative messages. Even when only one person speaks at a time, other participants exchange information continuously among themselves and with the speaker through gesture, gaze, p...

Motion Design for Nonverbal Communication with a Humanoid Robot

In the near future, humanoid robots will act as the partners of human beings in daily life. Among numerous human-like competencies, motion of humanoid robots is critical for providing humans with richer interactions with such robots. Motion plays an essential role in complementing spoken communication. Moreover, the motions of humanoid robots generate nonverbal communication in various contexts...

Give Children Toys Robots to Educate and/or NeuroEducate: the exemple of PEKOPPA in Neurotypical and Atypical Children Aged 6 Years

Using an InterActor toy robot named PEKOPPA in a “speaker-listener” situation, we have compared the verbal and the emotional expressions of neurotypical and autistic children aged 6 to 7 years. The speaker was always a child (neurotypical or autistic); the listener was a human or the toy robot which reacts to speech expression by nodding only. The results appear to indicate that minimalistic ar...
